The Macomb County Clerk handles vital records, business registrations, notary commissions, concealed pistol licenses, election administration, and county commission records. For vital records specifically, call the Vital Records Division at (586) 469-5270. The office has birth, death, and marriage records on file. Under MCL 333.2815, birth records less than 100 years old are restricted to the registrant, parents, or legal representatives. Once a birth record passes the 100-year mark, it becomes open to anyone. Death and marriage records are generally public. You can request copies in person or by mail. Fees vary by record type, so call ahead to confirm the current cost.

You can search by grantor or grantee name, property address, parcel number, document type, or date range. The online search is free. Document copies cost $1 per page. Certified copies run $5 plus $1 per page after that. The register of deeds records include deeds, mortgages, liens, land contracts, and other recorded documents for all property in Macomb County. If you need to trace a chain of title or check for liens before a closing, this is the right office.

Macomb County has six district courts spread across its communities. The 37th District Court at 8300 Common Road in Warren serves Warren and Center Line. That court is reachable at (586) 574-4900. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM with a lunch closure from noon to 1:00 PM. The 37th District Court handles misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations, civil cases up to $25,000, small claims up to $6,500, and felony arraignments. Judges include John M. The 41A District Court at 40111 Dodge Park Road in Sterling Heights serves that city. Call (586) 446-2500 for the main line. Division-specific numbers are (586) 446-2535 for civil, (586) 446-2550 for criminal, and (586) 446-2575 for traffic. The lobby is open 8:30 AM to noon and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Walk-in arraignments are held Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 AM. Judges at this court include Annemarie Marino Lepore, Kimberley A. Wiegand, and Eric Shepherd.

Under MCL 15.231-15.246, any person can request public records from the county. You don't need to be a Macomb County resident. The county has 5 business days to respond. They can grant the request, deny it with a written explanation, or request up to 10 extra days for large or complex requests.
Copy fees are $0.10 per page. Certified copies cost $5.00 plus copying charges. The county can charge for labor time spent searching, reviewing, and redacting records. If the estimated cost goes over $50, they may ask for a deposit before starting the work. Fee waivers exist for people who can show they qualify based on income or public interest. If a FOIA request gets denied, you have 180 days to file an appeal.
